Frequently Asked Questions

Registered Dietitians (RDs), also known as Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs), are highly trained and certified experts in nutrition. The team of RDs at The Nutrition Insider have completed degrees in nutrition, including classes in biochemistry, biology, organic chemistry, anatomy, physiology, culinary science, nutrition counseling, and more. Registered Dietitians must receive national and state licensure through board exams, complete over 1,000 hours of clinical training in a dietetic internship, and maintain ongoing continuing education.

Registered Dietitians are nutrition experts who help you with a variety of concerns using evidence-based information tailored to your specific needs. Some areas that a Registered Dietitian can help with include weight loss, gut health, chronic disease management (like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure), disease prevention, healthy aging, skin health, inflammation, or specialized diets. Essentially, dietitians have the education and experience to help you reach your health goals.

Yes, Registered Dietitians (RDs or RDNs) are different than nutritionists. RDs have completed degrees in nutrition, including classes in biochemistry, biology, organic chemistry, anatomy, physiology, culinary science, nutrition counseling, and more. Registered Dietitians must receive national and state licensure through board exams, complete over 1,000 hours of clinical training in a dietetic internship, and maintain ongoing continuing education. Conversely, the terms “nutritionist” or “health coach” are not regulated or standardized—anyone can call themselves a nutritionist without undergoing certifications, designated coursework, and passing exams. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that nutritionists and health coaches are not knowledgeable about nutrition, these professions do not undergo the same rigorous and qualifying standards for education, clinical training, or licensure as RDs.

First consultations with an RD are typically one hour, with a comprehensive assessment of your current health status and goals, eating and lifestyle habits, and roadblocks you have. By the end of the session, you’ll have established realistic and achievable health goals together. Follow-up appointments may be 30-60 minutes long, depending on your preferences.

The number of appointments you need depends on your health goals, current habits, and the level of support you prefer. Most people would benefit from more than one session, as multiple sessions can help with monitoring and re-assessing health goals. Multiple sessions (3 to 5) are ideal for people who need help with gradual habit changes, weight loss, digestion issues, or chronic disease support, as follow-ups can help to track progress and adjust your plan. Some people may want on-going support (such as recurring monthly or bi-monthly appointments) to stay on track with their health goals.

Yes, dietitians can definitely help with weight loss. RDs can help with weight loss by using their knowledge of metabolism, nutrition science, blood sugar management, goal setting, behavior change strategies, sustainable eating habits, portion control, and mindful eating.

The Nutrition Insider does not accept insurance at this time. However, you may be able to use your HSA or FSA funds if you obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity from your healthcare provider. We recommend checking with your HSA/FSA provider to confirm eligibility.

Based on dietitian licensure limitations, our RDs can currently see you if you reside in the following states: California, Colorado, Michigan, Arizona, and Virginia.
